Primary Care Q & A

What is primary care?

Primary care encompasses preventive medical services designed to promote your long-term health. With a team of experienced healthcare providers, Physicians for Women offers comprehensive primary care services, including:

  • General medical exams
  • Well-woman checkups
  • Preventive care
  • Immunizations
  • Lifestyle modification counseling

If you have an urgent health concern, an on-staff triage nurse is available at Physicians for Women to help you schedule a visit.

What happens when I see my primary care provider?

Physicians for Women recommends coming in at least once a year for a general medical exam. Annual checkups allow your primary care providers to partner with you on your way to wellness.

During your visit, your provider reviews your medical history and asks about past illnesses and your current health. They check your vital signs, including your:

  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Height
  • Weight
  • BMI

Your provider discusses your immunizations and may advise getting a flu shot or another immunization.

Your provider discusses daily habits that contribute to the likelihood of developing chronic health issues over time. They may suggest lifestyle modification counseling, which includes education and coaching on weight management, nutrition planning, and exercise guidelines.

If you need preventive health screenings, Physicians for Women offers the convenience of an on-site lab for blood draws, diagnostic tests, and ultrasounds, including a state-of-the-art GE Voluson™ 4D ultrasound.

Is a women’s health exam different than primary care?

In general, your annual well-woman checkup is a preventative visit to make sure you're up to date with health screenings, such as:

  • Mammogram
  • Colonoscopy
  • Screening blood tests
  • Immunizations

Many of our patients utilize the primary care group, Phases; a part of the team that focuses on preventative and primary care. This visit is also an ideal time to discuss healthy lifestyle habits with your Physicians for Women provider. Similarly, general gynecological exams provide an overall assessment of your gynecological health.

OB/GYN services at Physicians for Women address common women’s health problems, such as:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal pap smears
  • Menopausal symptoms

If your medical condition requires referral to an outside specialist, rest assured that the team is here to help. They work closely with you to navigate the often confusing and intimidating healthcare systems, coordinating appointments, and answering your questions along the way.

If it's time for your primary care visit, call Physicians for Women today or schedule your appointment online.
