Promoting Peace During Pregnancy & Postpartum – Yogamoms Classes Move to Our Clinic

A new chapter is beginning for our clinic and for Yogamoms, a group started by our midwife, Christine Kern Steffen in 2003. Christine has been holding her classes at Mound Street Yoga, but as the studio closes in July they will be moving the Prenatal and Postnatal classes to our clinic. We are thrilled to have classes available now at the clinic and look forward to welcoming the women Christine has been teaching to experience their classes in our open and welcoming space.

Pregnancy is a wondrous time and a woman’s body does amazing things while pregnant, in labor and after the baby has arrived. Christine works with moms to explore the mind, body and spirit while always promoting peace during pregnancy and postpartum. The classes offer a supportive community of friendship, while also helping women to feel prepared and empowered for labor, delivery and motherhood.

The community that is created with these women is amazing and unique to Yogamoms. Each class starts with 30 minutes of “circle” introductions and sharing about how each woman is feeling – occasionally women who were in the class will return and tell their birth stories at the beginning of classes. The women empower each other by sharing their experiences – they give each other practical advice for normal discomforts/concerns.

Classes also prepare the mother both physically (specifically with focus on proper pelvic alignment) and mentally for birth whether that be medicated, natural or cesarean. Fundamentals are breathing (helps so much with labor) and being present (helps with parenting). The physical focus is on specific areas of body such as pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, opening hips, heart, and shoulders which caters to the anatomical, hormonal, and muscular changes that occur normally in the pregnant body by creating sequences which lessen discomfort, so students feel better after each class.
